Jonathan Timmis

Welcome to my website!  Please find my research here.

I am a research economist at the World Bank - East Asia & Pacific Chief Economist's Office.  I'm also an External Affiliate of University of Nottingham's research centre on Globalisation and Economic Policy, an Affiliate of CESifo's Digitalisation Research Group, a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.  Until recently I worked at the OECD, Productivity and Business Dynamics Division and have been a Junior Fellow of the Royal Economic Society and a Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute.

I research the areas of digitalisation and technological change, firm productivity and globalisation. My research has covered the effects of technology diffusion on trade and firm performance and the implications of changes in the structure of trade networks for firms.  Recently I have been working on the impacts of automation and cloud computing, how technology affects firm organisation and their workers, and how intangibles and technology impact competition and industry concentration.

My research has been presented at various conferences including: ASSA Annual Meetings, CESIfo, European Trade Study Group, NBER Summer Institute, NBER Spring Meetings, Royal Economic Society and ZEW, and has been featured in the Economist special report on competition and a Harvard Business Review report on Superstar Firms.

I completed a PhD in Economics (without corrections) at the University of Nottingham in 2015, under the supervision of Prof. Richard Kneller (University of Nottingham) and Prof. Daniel Bernofen (now at American University).
